Section 01

The first leg leads from Ziegelbrücke to Niederurner Tal. Camp overnight at the log cabin in Mättmenriet. The log cabin is idyllically situated, surrounded by mountain landscape and forest. Have a BBQ at the firepit in the large natural playground for dinner. Bring a sleeping bag. Sleeping mats are available in the log cabin.

Section 02

The second leg leads from Niederurner Tal into the Oberseetal. Then, via the Obersee Berghotel, the trail carries on for one and a half hours to the provisional stopover at Rautihüttli. A rustic hut on the alp, with a simple, well-kept dormitory. When Kurt and Ursi’s alpine herders are at the upper cabin, you have an opportunity to order dinner and breakfast. Otherwise, a cooking hut and an outdoor fireplace are available. Ursi will be happy to provide further information. Please bring a sleeping bag.

Section 03

The third leg leads from Oberseetal into the legendary Klöntal. A dip into this mountain's sparkling waters is a great treat during the impressive hike across alpine terrain over Rauti and Wiggis and down to Klöntalersee. Overnight accommodation is at Hotel Rhodannenberg, which is situated at the front of the lake.

Section 04

The fourth leg begins at Klöntal/Hotel Rhodannenberg up to Glärnischhütte SAC. Set off from the dam, and continue along the alpine fjord to Plätz and Richisau. Take a break in Richisau's open-air restaurant amidst majestic maple trees. The path leads through the mystical Timmerwald before climbing towards Glärnischhütte SAC where the Glärnischhütte team will welcome you.

Section 05

The fifth leg leads from Glärnischhütte SAC to Ortstockhaus in Braunwald. Over Zeinenfurgglen and the impressive Alp Bösbächi, refreshments await at Alpbeizli. This long-distance trail leads southwards and over Seblen and Gumen to Ortstockhaus in Braunwald. The Ortstockhaus, with a glorious view of the Glarus Alps, is a listed historical landmark from 1931 and is well-known for its semicircular shape.

Section 06

The sixth leg proceeds from Ortstockhaus in Braunwald to Glattalphütte SAC. The Ortstock, a prominent feature, is Braunwald's well-known landmark. Those desiring a challenging detour can reach the summit on the way to Glattalphütte SAC, situated by the uniquely picturesque Glattalpsee.

Section 07

The seventh leg leads from Glattalphütte SAC to Gasthaus Urnerboden. Over the impressive high-plateau Mären with its karst terrain, the route offers plenty of views, including the possibility of a detour to Läckistock before reaching Urnerboden.

Section 08

The eighth leg continues from Gasthaus Urnerboden to Claridenhütte SAC. Leaving its green alpine vale and heading towards the Clariden Glacier, enjoy the expansive glacial views. Stunning views of the Tödi and its glacial cap also await you. The passage up to Gämsfairenjoch is secured with chains.

Section 09

The ninth leg leads from Claridenhütte SAC to Fridolinshütte SAC. Passing Ober Sand, with its captivating alpine and species-rich flora. After stopping at the glacier stream, you can hike directly to Fridolinshütte SAC; alternatively, take one or two detours at this stage. Prehistoric reptile tracks can be found, as indicated in the hiking guide, in the direction of Planurahütte SAC.

Section 10

The tenth leg leads from Fridolinshütte SAC back down the valley to Berggasthaus Obbort. It is worth making a detour early in the morning to the first SAC cabin in Switzerland, Grünhornhütte SAC, about one hour from Fridolinshütte SAC. The hike down to Tänntiwang, further up out of the valley to Tierfed is the last stretch, through a small beech forest to Berggasthaus Obbort.

Section 11

The eleventh leg leads from Berggasthaus Obbort to Muttseehütte SAC. A steep and excitingly demanding path secured with chains leads up over the Tritt. The Via Glaralpina leads up to Baumgartenalp, where the view of the Tödi is breathtaking. The trail continues upwards and leads to Muttseehütte SAC, often home to many ibexes.

Section 12

The twelfth leg leads from the Muttseehütte SAC to the Bifertenhütte AAC. Surrounded by the Muttsee and a panoramic view of the Limmernsee and the nearby mountains lies a breathtaking high alpine landscape. The hike leads along the Muttsee Reservoir. After a stop at the Kistenpasshütte SAC, the route continues over the Muttenberge. This is followed by the descent over the Kistenpass to the Camona Durschin, Bifertenhütte of the AAC Basel.

Section 13

The thirteenth leg leads from Bifertenhütte AAC to the self-catering, unattended refuge at Panixerpass. Via Glaralpina guides you towards the Panixerpass through a rugged landscape. The impressive craggy landscape gradually transforms itself into more attractive and colourful palettes. There is also a small meadow and a lake at Panixerpass.

Section 14

The fourteenth leg leads from the refuge on Panixerpass to Martinsmadhütte SAC. This is Via Glaralpina's pinnacle stage - traversing Bündner Vorab (3028 m above sea level) and Glarner Vorab (3018 m above sea level) to its highest point. An impressive hike through high alpine landscapes. The descent, secured with chains via Schwarzwändli, brings you to Martinsmadhütte SAC.

Section 15

The fifteenth leg leads from Martinsmadhütte SAC to Berggasthaus Edelwyss in Weissenbergen. Initially, descending to Tschinglenalp at the heart of the Sardona Tectonic Arena, the views of Tschingelhörner with Martinsloch are impressive. The Via Glaralpina continues along the mountain trail through Tschinglenschlucht to Elm Töniberg. Climbing up to Fanenstock, this long-distance trail leads to Chrauchtal and Weissenberge via Stuelegghoren.

Section 16

The sixteenth leg leads from Berggasthaus Edelwyss in Weissenbergen to Skihütte Mülibachtal. An incredible stretch with alpine roses leading towards Gulderstock. On to Guldergrat with the impressive Gipsgrat which appears snow-white depending on the light of the day. Varied rock tones accompany you on this part of Via Glaralpina. The trail soon descends via Wissmeilen and Wissmeilenpass to reach the rustic and cosy Skihütte Mülibachtal.

Section 17

The seventeenth leg takes you from Skihütte Mülibachtal to Naturfreundehaus Fronalp. The trail leads out from the valley above Engi in the direction of Kerenzerberg. Across magnificent Verrucano slabs at Chüebüch to Gufelstock, then over a panoramic hike via Höch / Chli Höch and Heustock to Schwarzstöckli. Over Wisschamm to Rotärd and Fronalppass, then gently descend to Naturfreundehaus Fronalp.

Section 18

The eighteenth leg leads from Naturfreundehaus Fronalp to Filzbach. The Via Glaralpina carries you across alpine terrain, partly secured with chains, to the summit via Fedensattel and Leiststock to Nüenchamm. Unparalleled panoramic views stretch all around. Delight in the scenery with the magnificent Mürtschenstock. Stay overnight at Seminarhotel Lihn in Filzbach.

Section 19

The nineteenth leg completes the Via Glaralpina circuit and takes you from the Seminarhotel Lihn in Filzbach down to Gäsi and the starting point, Ziegelbrücke Railway Station. So lace up your hiking boots and take the beautiful path from Filzbach, down to Gäsi. Bathe on the shores of the Walensee, and stay overnight where you can reflect on your memorable round trip as it draws to a close.
